THE FOUR GREAT IMAMS IN ISLAM
Imam Abu Hanifah
Abu Hanifah was the first great Imam among the Imams in Islam. The names of imam Abu Hanifah is Al Numan bn Thabit bn Zaoty Alkufiyy. He was born in Basrah in Iraq in 80A.H. He grew up and lived in kufah, where he worked as a trader in textile. He also studies under the popular scholars and was an intelligent, knowledgeable student among his colleagues. He travelled to madinah to acquired more knowledge then he returned to kufah and appointed him as great jurist of shari’ah in kufah and many Muslims in the world studied under him, people loved him because of his honesty and kindness he had in business. According to the history we read that Abu Hanifah’s school is the largest school in the world and the two famous among his students are: Muhammad bn Hassan and Abu Yusuff. When Abu Hanifah got older, the Caliph of Baghdad Al Mansur invited him to come to Baghdad as chief judge. He refused and replied. “Supposing a complaint is made against you in my court and you wanted it to be decided in your favour, otherwise you would have me thrown in the river rather than tamper with justice”. At last the caliph threw Abu Hanifah into prison where he died at the age of 70 years in the year of 150A.H. All the people of Baghdad mourned his death to the surprise that fifty thousand people attended his funeral prayer.
