HADITH 8
On the authority of Ibn-Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “I am commanded to fight with men till they testify that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His messenger, observe prayer, and pay the Zakat. When they do that they will keep their lives and their property safe from me, except for what is due to islam and their reckoning will be at Allah’s hands”. Transmitted by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
Comments:
This tradition shows that the prophet was commanded to fight, this is not of battle or war but of persuading the common folk to follow the rules of Allah in line with the prophet tradition in order to safeguard the unity of Allah, the saying of prayers and the giving out of alms so that Islamic religion would prevent. Fasting is not mentioned here because it is something which is compulsory only on those who have the means of doing so. However, fasting and pilgrimage might have not started yet at that time.
The tradition shows that according to Islam anyone who commits a capital murder must be killed as his punishment. Anyone who oppresses another must be punished in accordance with the degree of his oppression. He must be made to pay for the oppression committed. This shows that a Muslim is judged by what he practices openly but he cannot be judged by what is in his mind. That is something between his and creator, Allah.
